lyrics
I wished I’d been the centrepiece
Upon a shrine made of your feelings
On a tightrope love of balance beams
Always trying to find some meaning
Like every road has two ways to go
When the right direction comes you will know
But sometimes you just can’t do
What you know you’re supposed to
The future once clung to our legs
And it followed wherever we went
We saved away all of our borrowed time
I didn’t care I could never pay back mine
My life’s my only gift your go to
Something sacred I’d gift to you
But such a fate so definite can wait
Because the truest love we’re still to make
You could never truly live
If you could never truly die
You’re not just anyone
Nowhere near
You can never truly live
But I promised myself
It was better to try
Better to try
And if we find ourselves in a snowball fight
I’d still want you on my side
You sang the praises of the shade below your lemon trees
Well I hope you know it’s still you I rest beneath
Let’s break our promise, see it through
Find some new guns to stick to
But you said to bury mine with kindness first
Before they tunnel their way out way worse
Wish I’d been the masterpiece
Hung on a wall within your heart’s museums
But this custom-made costume fits
Nowhere near as well as you think
It’s all well and good, having dreams
And I know the dust will settle down eventually
On a little piece of heaven just for me
Things work themselves out, they always do
But why’d I have to go and fall in love with you

Like so many others, this came like a bolt out of the blue and, even though it's well before payday, I had to have this astonishing album on vinyl to prove it exists. The feel of the tunes makes me feel like the Impressions do, Curtis Mayfield, the big spaces and instinctive horns and stuff drifting in and out. Great grooves and I can see lots of ghosts nodding along to this with big smiles on their faces. At last! Anthony Cottrell
